I have a Dell desktop with 2 DVD drives, a DVD-ROM and a DVD-RW drive. Recently I am able to play dvd's with Windows Media Player 11. DVD's play just fine when I use Media Player Classic (I have have problems playing with Real and Corel WinDVD as well). When using WMP11, I get the error message 'Windows Media Player cannot play this DVD because there is a problem with digital copy protection between your DVD drive, decoder, and video card. Try installing an updated driver for your video card.' I have updated the video drivers, firmware on the DVD drive, download numerous CODEC packs but nothing seems to address this problem.

I'm tempted to remove all players, codecs, etc and rebuild from scratch but thought I'd check here first. A simple searchreveals this to be a recurrent problem, although there may be many causes for this message. I have uninstalled media player, reinstalled it and the problem persists. The other things I have done are:1) uninstall any other media player on the system (roxio, xvid, divx, VLC and a few trial versions of others)2) I bought the Cineplayer Decoder and installed that.3) Upgraded the driver for my video card (nvidia Gforce 7300 LE)4) Tried turning off hardware acceleration on the video card5) Installed a specific driver for my monitor (it had been using a generic one which worked just fine)6) I made sure that Cineplayer was the default decoder using 'Windows XP Video Decoder Checkup Utility'7) removed extraneous codecs such as k-lite. Xp codec pack 2.5.1, combined community codec pack.Still the problem remains. About the only thing I havent done is disable and reinstall the DVD drives (the same problem occurs whether I use the DVD ROM or RW)Not sure if its of any help but here is the output of Technical Support Info from WMP11.

Well, by trial and error, I have WMP11 playing DVDs. It turns out the Blackberry desktop software installs a decoder (Main Concept mp4 and mp2) Removing the registry entries for these two decoders (using regsvr32 -u ) seems to have cleared up the problemwith WMP11.

What I dont understand is why WMP11 was still using this decoder when I I had set CineMaster as my preferred decoder using Windows XP Video Checkup Utility. Now I will start to reinstall some of the other apps I had stripped out while tryingto solve this problem.I have to comment that the Microsoft online support and documentation and the error message itself are HORRIBLY LACKING. There is a huge number of people who get this message, and I'm sure that the same message is put out there for very different underlyingerrors. Even just trying to understand the relationship between WMP, codec, decoders is hard to determine. Microsoft I give you a fail on this!!
